FPH Bulletin – Issue 46 – December 2008

From the President

We are now just one year away from the UN world conference on climate change in Copenhagen. This will be an absolutely crucial meeting in agreeing the post-Kyoto international framework for tackling global warming. It could be the last chance to get it right, if we're going to significantly mitigate an already unfolding global public health catastrophe.

Health professionals have a potentially powerful voice in the lead-up to Copenhagen, and I am sure we would all want our collective voice to be heard and heeded. The Climate and Health Council is an advocacy group set up to coordinate the voice of health and healthcare in the UK and its aims and principles are supported by a range of health bodies including the FPH.

The Council has launched a campaign to gather 10,000 health professional sign-ups to its Pledge by March 2009 and I would hope that we public health people will be in the forefront.

So please click on the link www.climateandhealth.org/pledge and add your name to the cause. And while you're about it, do a bit of viral marketing and send the link out through your own networks. If each of us forwards it to at least 10 colleagues we could smash through the 10,000 target well before Christmas.

All the best

Alan

PS...In addition to working hard to highlight the need for action on climate change, FPH will be donating money to the Woodland Trust, to plant native tree species instead of sending out Christmas cards.

Health professionals still at risk of bloodborne viruses through work
Healthcare workers are still being put at risk of bloodborne viruses through occupational exposure and a significant number of these incidents are preventable, according to a report released by the Health Protection Agency.

'Eye of the Needle', the Agency's bi-annual report into the occupational exposure of healthcare workers to bloodborne viruses, reviews the trends and number of incidents involving exposures, via needlestick injury or sharp objects, to patients with hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.
