Part A - Results & Feedback

Marking

Papers are anonymised and marked by two examiners working individually. Each question is marked by a separate pair of examiners. Candidates must pass both Paper I and Paper II separately in order to pass overall. For further details see the marking algorithm [pdf] used by the Executive Examiners.

Extenuating Circumstances

If a candidate strongly believes that adverse circumstances affected their examination performance or revision period, this information may be brought to the attention of the Board of Examiners. The Board of Examiners, however, can give only limited weight to this information. It is the candidate’s responsibility to complete and return the extenuating circumstances form [pdf] to the Education Department within three days of taking the examination.

Notification

Examination results will be sent first class and marked ‘private and confidential' within two to three days of the Part A results meeting. A pass list and results summary will also be published on the Faculty website on the second Monday following the Part A results meeting. Examination results will not be given over the telephone. Results are not posted in the Faculty premises.

The result for all candidates will be sent to Faculty Advisors and Programme Directors.

All candidates who are unsuccessful in the examination will receive feedback on their examination performance in the form of marks, as well as the question key points and examiners' general comments. Candidates will not receive detailed individual feedback.

Banking

It is possible to 'bank' papers at Part A. This means that if the candidate does not pass the examination but has passed an individual paper, this result can be banked so that the candidate need not sit this paper again. This is feasible due to the explicit separation of knowledge and skills between Papers I and II.

Please note the following:

  • An individual paper (I or II) may be banked only when it has been passed and only when an overall score of 100/200 or more has been attained in the examination as a whole.
  • Candidates who bank a paper at a sitting must then sit the remaining paper at each subsequent examination.
  • A candidate will only be considered for a prize at their first sitting of the examination.
  • There will be no change in the examination fees for sittings of individual papers.
  • Candidates must continue to take both parts (papers) of the examination at the same sitting, unless a paper has been banked previously.
