From Public to Global
Latest issue - September 2008
Lead Article: Former NHS Chief Executive, Lord Crisp, reflects on the
notion of 'global health'.
Public health issues and concerns know no borders. To quote the Dalai Lama "because of modern technological evolution and our global economy, and as a result of the great increase in population, our world has greatly changed: it has become much smaller.
However, our perceptions have not evolved at the same pace; we continue to cling to old national demarcations and the old feelings of 'us' and 'them'."
This issue of ph.com illustrates that our perceptions have to change and public health can no longer be thought of only within national boundaries. Countries and policy-makers need to work collectively to face the myriad of public health challenges from sustainable development to pandemics to terrorism to human rights and equity across the world.
