National Treasures
'National Treasures' are training placements which offer trainees opportunities to acquire specific additional or contextual experience which may not be available in all programmes. National Treasure placements are intended to be undertaken by trainees in Phase 3 of training, allowing them to consolidate core skills in the practice of public health and/or to develop their specific interests.
To be designated by the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) as a 'National Treasure' these specialist training opportunities should be open to trainees from any Public Health training programme. National Treasure placements should be managed directly by the training programmes and individual organisations involved.
The two key individuals that should be involved are (1) the 'home' TPD, meaning the TPD of the programme where the candidate for the placement is currently based, and (2) the 'local' TPD, meaning the TPD of the programme within which the National Treasure placement is located for Quality Management Purposes. In certain circumstances these may be the same person.
FPH maintain an up-to-date list of designated 'National Treasure' placements. Please be aware that other placement opportunities may be available through TPD networks even if not listed here.
If you are a trainee interested in applying for one of the 'National Treasure' placements listed, please consider the following guidance:
- Trainees should discuss in detail with their 'home' TPD whether the intended placement would be appropriate for their stage in training.
- Trainees should discuss and agree arrangements for on-call and funding, such as expenses and salary with their 'home' TPD.
- As a condition of publication on the FPH website, providers have agreed to consider applications no earlier than one year before the intended start date. Before applying trainees must have the support of their 'home' TPD. After receiving approval trainees are expected to apply directly to the organisation offering the placement.
- Trainees are allowed to submit applications no more than one year in advance of their intended start date.
- Trainees should be aware that 'National Treasure' placements can not be taken up before they have passed the Part B MFPH examination and are in Phase 3 of training.
If you are a provider (potential or current) of appropriate placements, please consider the following guidance:
- In order to be published on the FPH website, all 'National Treasure' placements need to be considered suitable for public health trainees. Please discuss and confirm this with a local Public Health Training Programme Director, Head of School or Postgraduate Dean. Please give the name/s of those involved where requested on the Application Form.
- The placement should be open to trainees from any Public Health training programme who meets your person specification for the placement.
- In order to have the placement published on the FPH website, an application form must be submitted to FPH.
- The FPH Education and Training Department will review each application against certain criteria each placement must fill. A decision will normally be made within 4 weeks of receipt of the application.
- When the application is approved the placement will be added to the FPH website and feedback may be sought annually from the named Educational/Project Supervisor and trainee/s, if any have been in post.
- Although being on the FPH 'National Treasure' list can give more visibility to providers, please remember that this does not mean there is any obligation on Training Programme Directors to fill the post.
If you are a Training Programme Director, please consider the following guidance:
- All 'National Treasure' placements will be managed directly by local training programmes and individual organisations and not directly by FPH.
- Trainees in or soon to begin Phase 3 of training that wish to apply for a 'National Treasure' placement need to seek prior approval from their 'home' TPD.
- The 'home' TPD should discuss the arrangements for on-call and funding, such as expenses and salary with the trainess before they apply for a National Treasure placement.
- The 'home' TPD should check that the potential Learning Outcomes and proposed areas of work are suitable for the applicant before giving approval.
- Before final approval for the placement the 'home' TPD should make contact with the 'local' TPD to check there have been no significant changes to the intended placement since it was designated by FPH as a 'National Treasure'.
